I ended up doing a meeting with the CEO of a Fortune 100 meeting wearing a T-Shirt that read "Dot Comers Do It Better," jeans and sneakers. Better that than missing a deal of a lifetime I thought. Affiliates4U Gets a Fourth Life
The UK’s only affiliate marketing forum, Affiliates4U, was rebranded and relaunched on Monday, evolving from a straightforward forum into an all-round Web 2.0 community portal.
Affiliates4U was launched at the turn of the millennium by Matt Wood as an affiliate marketing directory listing hundreds of affiliate programs paying in UK pounds. It included articles to help people get going in the nascent field of affiliate marketing and even had its own banner exchange.
It soon developed into a discussion forum for people in the industry using Ezboard as the forum technology. The lack of flexibility with Ezboard forced A4U to switch to Vbulletin in 2003.
The new site still uses Vbulletin but includes custom coded sections with blogs, communities, news, events and a directory of providers.
A part of the UK affiliate marketing community has migrated to ‘social networking’ portals like Facebook and the revamped A4U is an attempt to win them back.
Tom Freeman, Technical Director at Existem, the company which runs A4U, has been working on the site since January 2007.
“The new site has been developed to help facilitate relationships in affiliate marketing,” says Matt Wood. “The new site enables you to build a network of friends and colleagues, create communities on verticals, paid search, local groups etc. The forum is still very central to the site, however we have added much more. Members within the community can add their own blog to the aggregator, and have the ability to ‘back’ or ‘slap’ other posts, enabling the community to vote what’s worth reading, and thus breaking through the noise of a traditional forum.”
The new A4U has been warmly received by the affiliate community. James Avery, Managing Director of Flightmapping and a popular member of the forums, believes the revamped A4U would help facilitate interaction between members. “It takes the interaction we have at the get2gethers back online,” he told the Weekly Q. “It bridges a gap between the forums and get2gethers. The community sections will help people find like-minded people a lot easier.”
Buy.at Celebrates Growth in Style with Speakeasy 2007
The buy.at affiliate network ran its much-anticipated annual event on March 9 with hundreds of affiliates, agencies and merchants gathering in London’s West End to enjoy an afternoon of talks and an evening of networking. PrimeQ, which promotes merchants on buy.at, was there to participate in the jam-packed day.
There were parallel presentations for merchants and affiliates from 2pm until 6pm at the swish Courthouse Kempinski Hotel. A discussion with four of buy.at’s leading affiliates was the most controversial part of the afternoon as three of them generated a significant portion of their income from bidding on the brand names of merchants, which they had exclusive rights to and had not been handed via a transparent process. One of the affiliates listening to the discussion told the Weekly Q: “I wish the process was more open and others were given an opportunity.”
Tyson Pearcey, who chaired the presentation, explained how buy.at had responded to criticism by developing a tendering process which gives other affiliates with paid search experience a better chance to win brand name bidding rights.
The attendees walked over to the nearby 24 bar, where many of them hung around until well after midnight enjoying the copious food, drink and dance. The current ‘in’ place in London, it features state-of-the-art interactive light projections on the walls and LED lights which give the venue over 1000 color combinations.
Vincent Montero was one of three members from PrimeQ to attend the successful event along with James Evans and Nadeem Azam. He exclaimed: “I have the highest regard for buy.at and enjoyed hob-knobbing with their fabulous staff.”
"I'm delighted some of the PrimeQ team could come along as we have a good working relationship with them,” Chris Mockford of buy.at declared to the Q. “They have been driving leads to key programs on buy.at for a while now and I look forward to spending more time socialising with PrimeQ."
Launched in 2002, buy.at has grown rapidly to becoming one of the leading affiliate networks in the UK with the company reporting a turnover in 2006 of approximately £19m.
